The Institute for Transport Studies (ITS) is a free-standing school of the University of Leeds and has a reputation for research excellence.

The results of the national Research Excellence Framework (REF2014) exercise have confirmed that the Institute for Transport Studies (ITS) at the University of Leeds is an international centre of excellence for research outputs, impact and environment and ranked it 2ndin the national league table onresearch power.

In 2009, ITS was awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize in recognition of sustained excellence: 40 years impact in transport research and teaching. ITS has 50 academic staff, delivering expert advice to the World Bank, the European Commission, the European Conference of Ministers of Transport, the House of Commons Transport Select Committee and many other stakeholders. ITS has a keen interest in ensuring the efficient delivery of high quality research, and was the first academic unit in Britain to achieve ISO 9001 accreditation for research, held continuously since 1995. As part of ensuring quality in research delivery ITS has achieved the highest Investor in People standard. Research carried out at ITS ranges from blue-skies exploration of new ideas and concepts to commissions for specific clients such as UK Research Councils, The Department for Transport, The European Union, The UK Highways Agency and the rail and bus industries.

ITS at the University of Leeds will be heavily involved in all aspects of the project and will be fully responsible for the coordination of the project as well as leading the activity Social Innovation: sharing and self-organisation.
