The Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research – Nederlandse Organisatie voor Toegepast Natuurwetenschappelijk Onderzoek – TNO was founded by law in 1932 to enable business and government to apply new knowledge.
TNO is an independent organisation regulated by public law: not part of any government, university or company. TNO has 3500 staff and an annual turnover of €580 million, which is used to create innovations that boost the sustainable competitive strength of industry and well-being of society. TNO works on innovations within five societal themes: Healthy Living; Industry; Urbanisation; Energy; and Defence, Safety & Security. TNO functions as an intermediary between basic research organisations and industry and translates scientific knowledge into practical but scientifically sound applications.
In the area of Mobility and Logistics, TNO’s focus is on the innovation of reliable transport systems and safe and clean mobility. It includes topics such as mobility services, behavioural change, intelligent vehicles, reducing conventionally fuelled vehicle use, travel behaviour, electric driving, and evaluating mobility policies. As well as covering relevant technological aspects, TNO holds expertise on influencing human behaviour. TNO’s Changing Behaviour research group develops and applies knowledge and technologies to help people adapt to new situations and to re-orient their routines, perceptions, habits, and rules of behaviour. Research facilities include advanced human-in-the-loop driving simulators, instrumented vehicles, advanced video analysis of behavioural observations of real-world traffic scenes, naturalistic driving studies, real world observations and on-line loggings of mobility behaviour.
