Social Innovation: Sharing and Self-Organisation

This activity will identify the significant determinants in the design of social innovation initiatives that involve individuals and groups sharing and organising their resources or networking for mutual benefit to bring about travel change. Social organisation and particularly time-based resources can be critical (TRANSGEN, 2007) and impact can vary across different groups particularly men and women, households with and without children and older dependants; and other social groups including vulnerable groups. Social innovation initiatives could include participating in walking buses for the school run, collecting another’s shopping and vice versa, or setting up a cycling buddy group; also pooling finances and sharing ownership or hire of an electric vehicle and the sharing of information and knowledge.

Empirical primary research will utilise existing social media and micro-local neighbourhood networks such as car clubs and lift sharing groups plus a new process-based observational technique of social networks. Empirical review and primary data collection will be disaggregated according to gender and other social groups to establish differential negative/positive impacts. The EMPOWER International Review of Social Innovation in Policy Implementations will provide a typology based on the key characteristics and effectiveness of social innovation for the reduction in CFV use and their impact on different sectors of the travelling public and will include a range or resources from published academic articles, professional trade magazines and ‘grey literature’.

The EMPOWER Toolkit Techniques, as part of the EMPOWER Toolkit, will contain recommendations, practical guidelines, case studies and tools that can be used by a range of transport sector stakeholders. Checklists for avoiding negative impacts on gender and other vulnerable groups will be provided, as well as a characterisation of skillsets for industry, policy makers and employers to implement and design social innovation based policy intervention.
